DRM Issue #18 – Bingham Family Rewrites IHRA History

POSTED: 2009-10-02 11:37:46  EMAIL TO A FRIEND  PRINT VIEW

Gary Bingham has had a long and successful career as a sportsman drag racer, and for as long as he has been winning races and championships, his family has been just as involved in the IHRA as he has.

Wife Renee is the organization’s chaplain, and daughters Christy and Lisa both race or raced. Christy Bingham won an Ironman in 2002, and younger sister Lisa claimed the first of her career with a win in Quick Rod at the North American Nationals.

The coolest part of the story is that Gary also won, taking his own Ironman with a victory in Top Sportsman, writing a new chapter in IHRA history in the process. Gary and Lisa will henceforth be recognized as the first father and daughter duo to ever win at a national event.

The proud Bingham family is featured on the cover of Issue 18.

In addition, we are proud to present coverage of the North American Nationals, the traditional fall race at Epping, New Hampshire’s New England Dragway. Championship point battles tightened up considerably as Del Cox Jr. (Top Fuel), Kenny Lang (Pro Modified), and Bob Bertsch (Elite Motorsports Pro Stock) all posed for photos in the winners circle. Read the extended coverage in DRM 18.

In the breaking news department, the announcement that Florida’s Palm Beach International Raceway has become a member of the IHRA’s growing family of outstanding racing facilities has created quite a buzz in the industry. Get all the details in this issue’s DRM Beat section.

The Summit Pro-Am competitors were hard at it in September, and we have reports from Skyview Drags in New York and South Carolinas’s Darlington Dragway.

We’re getting close to the finish line on the build of the extreme 800+ horsepower Motown LS small block from World Products. This potent “mouse” motor will power the Mullis dragster that will be awarded to the winner of the Summit SuperSeries Box class championship.

Don’t miss the opportunity to get off track with Randy Cunningham as he interviews one of the IHRA’s rising stars, Quick Rod competitor Lisa Bingham.

There’s also another of Susan Wade’s features on IHRA members tracks. This time around she presents her unique take on a unique facility, Virginia’s Sumerduck Dragway.

And of course IHRA President Aaron Polburn offers his unique take on the state-of-the-sport and the world in general in his “The Last Word” column.

Don’t forget to take advantage of a great opportunity to save big bucks on parts, services, and shipping, courtesy of leading performance industry manufacturers and DRM advertisers.
