New racing surface greets drivers at this weekend’s IHRA Mopar Rocky Mountain Nationals

Monday, 30 June 2014

Among the many exciting storylines entering this weekend’s IHRA Mopar Rocky Mountain Nitro Jam Nationals presented by Good Vibrations Motorsports and Parts Canada is the complete repave of the dragstrip from half-track to the finish line.

The new racing surface, redone for the first time since 2007, was ground down to the original track level, approximately 3”, and repaved giving racers a new surface and race fans a faster, more exciting race.

“The old asphalt was coming apart as it has been well used over the years,” said Mike Heil, Track Director at Castrol Raceway. “The track was also ground for flatness many years ago and that also had an effect on the top layer of the surface. This should take care of this issues and provide a better surface for competitors."

Rob Reeves, owner of Castrol Raceway, added, “some of the best and fastest racers in the country come here and tell us that this is the best track in the country, maybe in all the western half of the continent. We want to make sure they still feel that way. It’s important to me that the racers love coming here.”

Other new developments at Castrol Raceway include the debut of the 2.7km road course, which opened earlier this year, and a new four-acre pit area being developed on the south end of the current pit area.

“We are seeing more and more racers from all over western Canada coming to this facility every weekend and we want to make sure their time here is an enjoyable one,” Reeves said.

The Mopar Rocky Mountain Nationals will take place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Castrol Raceway. The event, now in its 12th year, includes one of the largest assortments of racing vehicles in the sport with over a dozen professional and sportsman classes taking part in the event over the three-day weekend. Professional competition at this year’s event will include racing in Top Fuel Dragster, Nitro Funny Car, Rocky Mountain Nostalgia Funny Car, Nitro Harley, Pro Modified, Alcohol Dragster, Alcohol Funny Car and more, plus an exciting fire show featuring the all-female Larsen Motorsports Jet Dragster team and the 10,000 horsepower “Fire Force” Jet Fire Truck.
