Located outside of Baton Rouge, La., State Capitol is the third-oldest continuously running quarter-mile drag strip in the United States. The facility, owned by Lanny and Valerie Lewis, and managed by Gary Carter has something that all tracks strive for — loyalty. That loyalty is evident with the large group of competitors, who consistently put on great racing through the season. That loyalty is also displayed between the facility and IHRA as the track has been IHRA-sanctioned since 2008.
The track was awarded the IHRA Summit Pro-Am Series Division 4 Track of the Year in 2016. It was a fixture on the national event Nitro Jam and Pro-Am schedules over the years. State Capitol is always known for its hospitality and making sure everyone has a good time while visiting the track. State Capitol made its Hollywood debut in the 2005 film “Dukes of Hazzard.” The movie used the drag strip as part of the “Annual Hazzard Rally.”
“Lanny, Val and Gary have done an awesome job of preserving the rich heritage of SCR and making sure everyone that comes to visit enjoys themselves,” IHRA Division 4,6 & 7 Director Frank Kohutek said. “You get treated like family at SCR regardless of how many times you’ve been to the track and that’s something special.
State Capitol track champions in 2020 were: David Robinson (Top), Larry Sequin (Mod), David Olinde (Sportsman), Mike Simoneaux (Street), Dave Walker (Doorslammers), Mike Nicoll (Quick 16), Eli Hebert (Masters), Slade Olinde (Jr. Dragster Beginner) and Kane Kern (Jr. Dragster Advanced).
