Blevins puts on a Spectacular driving performance

Wednesday, 05 December 2018

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — After a truly spectacular performance in 2018, Hannah Blevins is looking for a super run in 2019.

Blevins, a 22-year-old racer from Jefferson, N.C., won the Moser Engineering $10,000 top prize at the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Summit Sportsman Spectacular season finale at Farmington (N.C.) Dragway.

Now, her goal is to win the Farmington track championship in the IHRA Summit SuperSeries and get to the World Finals at Memphis.

“A couple of times, I’ve qualified for the runoffs at the Summit Team Finals and I’ve messed up in the first round,” she said. “The next goal is to win my first footbrake track championship and make it to the World Finals. I can’t wait again to race in the Summit Sportsman Spectacular when it comes back to our area.”

Blevins, who drives a 1977 Pontiac Trans-Am with a big-block Chevy motor, is about to race anytime. She started racing at age seven and loves all aspects of the sport including working on the cars. She grew up at the race track watching her dad race, and she said racing is the thing she most loves to do.

She certainly loved the IHRA Summit Sportsman Spectacular weekend where she earned the $1,000 bonus as the final No Box racer and then beat the remaining drivers using a delay box.

“It was a lot different than just running No Box racers, especially when I lined up against the dragsters,” she said. “It was the first time I had raced against the dragster. Winning that, it really tickled me. My dad is a big Box racer and he’s tried to talk to me about getting in a Box car. I just footbraked my way through it and I was like, ‘Who needs a button?’”

“I felt like this car, we hadn’t jived well all year. But that day, the car was just awesome, the track was awesome and I was dead-on. My worst reaction time of the day was .04.”

Blevins, who works for the Lowe’s Home Improvement central dispatch office, loves the weekly competition at Farmington Dragway. Surrounded by so many tracks in the Carolinas, the best footbrakers around often come to Farmington to test their mettle.

Blevins also races at other IHRA-sanctioned tracks, Wilkesboro Dragway and Elk Creek (Va.) Dragway. She also enjoyed this year’s IHRA Summit Team Finals at Darlington, S.C., where she and her fellow Farmington drivers met a new group of racers. It’s one of many reasons she enjoys being an IHRA member.

“I love the Summit SuperSeries program,” she said. “I like how you run for the track points and if you win the championship, you get to go to the world finals. I also like the Summit Team Finals event and how you represent your track. The IHRA puts on a lot of good events, and the Summit Sportsman Spectacular event was another top event.”
