Submitted by jbirchfield@ihra.com on Sun, 07/27/2025 - 22:50 MILAN, Mich. — It was worth the wait for Lex Joon and Del Worsham on Sunday at Darana Dragway - Milan. With the elimination rounds in the IHRA Outlaw Nitro Series postponed from Saturday due to rainy weather, Joon and Worsham won the Top Fuel and Funny Car races. The prestigious Ironman trophies and $50,000 winner’s purses respectively came with that, and the races were live streamed on IHRA.TV. Joon banged the blower on his dragster right at the finish line, but the former FIA Top Fuel champion had enough for the win. Called Europe’s most successful racer, it was his first win in the United States. “Thank the Good Lord who helped us out today,” Joon said. “Thank you IHRA. This is unbelievable what they did. We will be back for more. My crew was also unbelievable today to get the win.” Joon beat Scott Palmer, who won the season-opening race at Columbus, Ohio, in the semifinal. He was able to go down track in 3.964 seconds in the final round to beat Mitch King, who finished in 4.236 seconds after striking his tires. Joon was also quick at the tree with a .052 start. Del Worsham, Nitro Funny Car Winner Worsham, the 1992 IHRA World Champion, rocketed down the track in 4.085 seconds and 315.35 mph to defeat Dan Hix in the Funny Car final round. Hix matched Worsham at the start, but had trouble and finished in 4.496 seconds at 84.40 mph. It was quite the thrill ride and thrilling victory for Worsham. “This feels amazing. I was kind of bummed we didn’t win the last race so anything other than a win wasn’t going to be enough,” Worsham said. “I haven’t had one of these (Ironman trophies) in 30 years, September 1995, my last IHRA win, so this is really special to me.” Chris Powers, Mountain Motor Pro Stock Winner Chris Powers won on a holeshot with a .005 light in Mountain Motor Pro Stock to down Dillon Voss, who had a .022 reaction time. Their time down the drag strip was nearly equal with Powers going 4.172 seconds at 171.62 mph in his multi-colored Chevrolet Camaro. Voss finished in 4.175 seconds at 171.62 mph in his yellow Cobalt. He dedicated the win to the late engine builder Sonny Leonard as Powers still runs Sonny’s Racing Engines in his car. “I’m stoked. This is the only thing left we tried to get for Sonny, but IHRA quit running it years ago,” Powers said. “We’ve won championships in PDRA, races in NHRA, but now we’ve got an Ironman. I can’t thank the folks at Sonny’s Racing Engines enough, how they work on these motors and turn them around in days. The owners of IHRA, the people here at the track and the fans, thank you. It wouldn’t be possible without you.” Kurt Steding, Pro Mod Winner Pro Mod, which will come back to Milan for a $125,000 showdown on August 8-9, featured Kurt Steding edging Wes Distefano by just .008 for the win. Steding won his first Ironman trophy and a $50,000 winner’s purse with a 3.864-second pass at 204.64 mph. Distefano, who had a .010 to .028 advantage at the tree, finished in 3.711 seconds at 202.89 mph. “Wes is good on the tree and I watched him win a lot of 632 races on tree, so I knew I had to bring it,” Steding said. “I had to keep my mind cool. You will see us at the $125,000 race coming up in two weeks. Thank you (IHRA owner) Darryl Cuttell. He’s made this such a great place to race.” Will Smith, Top Alcohol Dragster Winner Will Smith picked up the Ironman trophy for his first national-event win in Top Alcohol Dragster. He powered down the track at 5.398 seconds and 269.14 mph as Rich McPhillips Jr. smoked the tires at the start. Smith had a tremendous .015 reaction time to .043 for McPhillips. Phil Esz, Top Alcohol Funny Car Winner Phil Esz scored his first-ever win in Top Alcohol Funny Car despite Tony Bogolo being .017 better at the starting tree. Esz was able to get past Bogolo with a 5.551 second run at 261.02 mph. Bogolo’s final-round numbers were 5.666 seconds at 256.12 mph. Tim Molnar, Pro Nitrous Winner Tim Molnar was able to power through the stripe on a 3.76-second run at 203.62 mph to keep Tony Wilson from winning back-to-back in Pro Nitrous. Molnar also had a .023 to .036 advantage at start. Wilson’s final numbers included a 4.280 seconds at 143.63 mph. Hall of Fame motorcycle rider Jay Turner capped off a dominant run with a win over Jordan Peterson in Top Fuel Harley. Peterson got the better start .039 to .061, but Turner came through with a 6.365-second run at 134.81 mph when both riders were putting out cylinders. It was Turner’s 18th IHRA national-event victory. Peterson completed his pass in 6.533 seconds.
