Top First place Joseph Newberry

STEELE, Ala. — Alabama International Dragway hosted the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Sportsman Spectacular last Saturday with Joseph Newberry, Tucker Kay and Grace Varner taking the win in their respective classes.

It featured a big payday of $5,000 to the Top (Box) winner, Newberry, and all three racers qualified for the IHRA Summit SuperSeries World Finals, which will also be held at Alabama International Dragway.

Newberry captured the Top (Box) victory and special IHRA Ironman trophy in his red dragster with a final-round victory over David Twilley.

Kay had the winning ride with his red Chevy Camaro in the Mod (No Box) class. He took home a $1,500 winner’s check, the special IHRA Ironman trophy and the satisfaction of beating the always tough Brian Hagler in his Chevy S-10 pickup in the final.

Varner rounded out the trio of winners in the Junior Dragster class. She collected her own special big winner’s check and IHRA Ironman trophy. With her final-round win over Mylee Elliott, Grace joined her dad, Derek Varner, and brother, Josiah Varner, as IHRA Summit SuperSeries World Final qualifiers.

Alabama International Dragway continues to host big events leading up to the IHRA Summit SuperSeries World Finals. It includes the Night of Fire on August 23, featuring Pro Mods, a $5,000 bracket race and Index Racing.
