Sometimes opportunities present themselves, and when they do, a championship contender takes advantage. Harper was the only top-five driver in the IHRA Pro Mod point standings that made the trip to Grand Bend Motorplex. He was the No. 2 qualifier and raced to the victory with a final-round win over No. 1 qualifier Bruce Boland. With the win, Harper left Grand Bend leading the Pro Mod point standings by 178 points – a nearly-insurmountable lead over Tetsohvili with just one race remaining in the season. “It’s great – the car’s just on rails,” Harper said in the winner’s circle. “The crew had it set up, and my job’s easy – just let the clutch out and hang on. It’s been a great weekend, and I love the fans up here. The guys (Canadian Pro Mod racers) up here are a fun bunch of guys – they’re great to race with; we’re hoping we can get them to the States to race with us some.” With his hefty points lead in hand, Harper arrived at the season’s final race, the IHRA Northern Nationals in Martin, Mich., knowing he only needed to make a qualifying attempt clinch the title. He qualified third and advanced to the semifinals before losing to race winner Billy Glidden. Harper credits his team for the 2016 IHRA Pro Mod World Championship. “We’ve had a fun year,” Harper said while reflecting on the season. “We’ve laughed, carried on and worked hard; the team has had a ball. My wife takes good care of them food-wise. The trophy is just a symbol of the hard work and the camaraderie. It’s great to be on top in any organization. That’s why we’re still racing. We just love to win, and the car’s capable of doing it…so the trophy is just a symbol of what the team has done. We won this championship because I have a great crew. It’s too big a deal to do it by yourself.”
