South Carolina Motorplex Seen as an Outdoor Event Destination

Tuesday, 25 May 2021

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Don’t let the name South Carolina Motorplex fool you.

Track owner Jeff Biegun has done an exceptional job with the racing facility, which was named International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Division 9 Raiders Track of the Year in 2019. But with the Neeces, S.C. track’s prime location near the intersection of Interstate 26 and Interstate 95, he sees it as a true entertainment destination.

Biegun, who owns RJS Racing Equipment, Seatbelt Solutions, and Performance 2 Way Racing Communications, purchased the 50-acres facility in 2017 from Buddy Boozer and then purchased 300-acres from his sister that was adjoining property.

“When I bought the race track in 2017, I knew from a business standpoint that you have to be diversified,” Biegun said. “That’s true with any business. RJS Racing, Motivation Tubing, Racing Direct.com, and all the companies we own, you have to be diversified. You can’t put all your eggs in one basket.

“We’ve built a mud bog here and it’s 600 x 400, 12-foot deep. There’s not a bad seat in the house because you’re 12 feet above the action. We’ve started with our “Friday Night Front Porch” concert series and two of them been sell outs. People are starting to recognize the South Carolina Motorplex as a music venue.”

They’ve been talking to some of the big names in country music and southern rock. Last year with the ability to spread out, they were able to host a huge Fourth of July fireworks show.

In addition, there are go-karts, motocross and even a 3/8-mile dirt track expected to be completed by January 2022. With a focus on a family-friend clean facility and its location in the middle of the triangle of Charleston, Columbia and Augusta, Ga., it has become one of the Palmetto State’s best outdoor-event venues.

As a drag racing facility, there is a good mix of grudge racing and bracket racing. The IHRA Summit SuperSeries works well for the South Carolina Motorplex. In particular, Biegun loves the fellowship when they participate in the IHRA Summit Team Finals.

“The pinnacle of coming here and racing in the points is going to the end of the year bracket finals,” he said. “Most of the people I know set aside that week for a week’s vacation. It’s a big deal and for us as a track owners and managers, we go to the bracket finals and get the chance to mingle with the racers. When they’re here, we have 100 different things to do. This gives everybody a chance to come over and listen to their ideas.”

Biegun likes how the IHRA is a good fit for all racers from those with the newest state-of-the-art equipment to those who work out of their backyard garage. It’s a big reason why the track decided to extend its partnership with the sanctioning body.

“The IHRA really understands the budget racer, the guy who loves doing this, but doesn’t have a million dollars to fund it,” Biegun said. “They’ve done well catering to those people and creating a venue that makes sense as a good value.”
