Founded in 1971, Beaver Springs Dragway features both 1/4-mile and 1/8-mile racing programs. The largest events of the year are on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. Other highlights include Friday Night Street Racing, Saturday Test n’ Tune, and Sundays featuring the IHRA Summit SuperSeries, the largest and most prestigious championship in bracket racing.
“The best part about Beaver Springs is we have great people — great racers and a great crew, very friendly,” track owner McCracken said. “We have the high-dollar races and our IHRA program is strong. We have a full team (at the IHRA Summit Team Finals) and the competition is good.”
With that as the backdrop, it made perfect sense for Beaver Springs to recently sign a new sanctioning agreement with the International Hot Rod Association.
“The IHRA is for the little guy and helps us, giving us plans and structure,” said McCracken, who purchased the track from founder “Beaver Bob” McCardle in 2017. “It helps keep everybody involved and keep it family-oriented sport, even when it’s going towards big money on some levels.”
Geared towards making a good racers’ experience, the track features a concession stand with tasty food, a goody booth, and clean restrooms. Beaver Springs Dragway was named the IHRA Summit SuperSeries Division 3 (North Stars) Track of the Year.
For McCracken, the drag strip is near and dear to his heart. He was just a boy when McCardle and friends converted the former Cameron Airport into Beaver Springs Dragway in a month’s time. It wasn’t until he was a teenager that he first visited the facility. It was definitely love at first sight.
“When I was 16 or 17, a friend of mine was building a car and asked if I wanted to come to the drag races,” he said. “The first day we got here I couldn’t believe all the cars and I was hooked from that day. None of my family was ever involved in racing. They all thought I was crazy, but years later I ended up buying the track.”
McCracken’s passion for the place rubs off on staff and racers alike. Beaver Springs made an impact at the 2020 IHRA Summit Division 3 Team Finals as Andrew Feltman won the Race of Champions and the track’s enthusiastic group of racers won the best team spirit award.
IHRA Summit SuperSeries track champions for 2020 were: Kevin Little (Top), Bob Klock (Mod), Joshua Houpt (Sportsman) and Isaiah Lohr (Junior).
