Track owner John Bartunek, a veteran drag racer known throughout the East Coast, and track manager Tony Brown share a passion for drag racing. Their passion ranges from the fast doorslammers to all the bracket racing classes and beyond.
With Bartunek’s long racing history, one of his first goals was to make the South Carolina track “racer-friendly.” It has meant upgrades to the 125-acre property which features a track billed as “the best 1/8-mile strip in the Southeast.”
Taking care of the racers and fans alike, they have been praised for the track prep, the friendly staff and the good food at the snack bar.
“John and Tony and the other folks at Union Dragway have taken an outstanding venue to the next level,” IHRA Division Director Josh Peake said. “They continue to work to enhance the experience of all who visit this fine facility.”
The track is located 25 miles outside of Spartanburg, South Carolina, a town steeped in motorsports history. Union Dragway made a little history of its own in June, hosting the IHRA Sportsman Spectacular presented by Hagerty and Moser Engineering.
But it’s more than major events as Bartunek understands the importance of the IHRA Summit SuperSeries, which features the largest and most prestigious championship in all of bracket racing.
Union Dragway’s own Dustin Carroll won the first-ever IHRA Summit SuperSeries Sportsman World Championship in 2019. He was again the track’s Sportsman representative at the 2021 IHRA World Finals. Other representatives included: Jamie Abercrombie (Top), Morgan Carroll (Mod) and Jadyn Price (Junior Dragster).
The track hosts events throughout the year. In January, there is a swap meet along with a full slate of drag racing for cars, motorcycles, lawn mowers, golf carts and four-wheelers.
