The competition at the Southeast Kentucky track, which opened in 1999, is some of the best in the country. It is the home track to 2018 IHRA Summit SuperSeries Mod (No Box) World Champion Toby Daniels and 2022 IHRA Summit SuperSeries Top (Box) runner-up Drew Smith.
London Dragway owner Craig Boone feels it’s no accident that drivers from London have enjoyed success at major events.
“You have to have a good package to win here. Everybody is pretty consistent and we keep the track consistent,” Boone said. “The competition they face here pays off when they get to the team finals and world finals.”
The 110-acre property is located in one of the most scenic parts of the country, adjoining the Daniel Boone National Forest and just miles from Cumberland Falls, called “The Niagara of the South.” Boone has worked hard on the property itself, fixing the blacktop and doing upgrades to the timing system.
They’ve expanded for additional pit parking and staging lanes on both sides. There are timing slips on both sides as the track is now able to host many more cars. They’ve also renewed a sanctioning agreement with the International Hot Rod Association.
The IHRA Summit SuperSeries program is popular with the racers. They love the camaraderie shared at the IHRA Division 2 (Heat Wave) Summit Team Finals.
“The racers like the fact that you have two chances to the World Finals,” Boone said. “If you win the track points, you can go, but you also have that other chance in the bracket finals. Plus, we always have a full team go (to the IHRA Summit Team Finals). We take care of them, feed them good and we all have a good time. It’s more than racing, it’s hanging out and having a good time while you’re there.”
Boone, who started out drag racing a 1964 Plymouth, enjoys those friendships formed at the race track. He also likes how London Dragway racers show good sportsmanship and represent the track in a positive way.
London Dragway representatives at the 2022 IHRA Summit SuperSeries World Finals were: Smith (Box), Robby Mayne (No Box), Daniels (Sportsman) and CJ Short (Junior Dragster).
In addition to the bracket racing, the track’s popular 4.70 Index Outlaw Door Car program will be back for the 2023 season. It’s run on the second weekend of every month from April to October and draws a solid number of entries. The Southeast Gassers are also scheduled to make a stop in July.
