Recent work at the track includes putting in new lights, while there are new scoreboards scheduled to be installed in January.
State Capitol was a fixture on the schedule back in the day of the IHRA’s national tours. In recent years, the IHRA Summit SuperSeries has worked well for the track with the focus on grassroots, Sportsman racing.
“It’s great that our racers have a shot at getting to the IHRA World Finals,” Pollage said. “They just have to keep that ‘X’ number up to date and have a shot at the World Finals.”
Multiple-time track champion David Olinde (Sportsman) and Kane Kern (Junior Dragster) were amongst the track’s IHRA Summit SuperSeries track champions in 2022.
There are even more opportunities for IHRA-member track champions in 2023 with a chance to win great prize packages. Also in 2023, Motorcycle racers will get their opportunity to race for their own IHRA Summit SuperSeries World Championship.
Since 2020, State Capitol has hosted other IHRA events like the Sportsman Spectacular and Ironman Classics.
A month ago, Silas Rogers had a perfect start on his way to winning the Super Pro (Box) main event at the State Capitol Ironman Classic. Other winners included: Bruce Lundberg (No Box), James Marceaux (Top Doorslammers), Peter Labarre III (Quick 16), Mike Simoneaux (Sportsman) and Michael Turman (Motorcycle).
There were three classes of Junior Dragster winners with Corbin Walker, Carson Graham and Kane.
“The Ironman is one of the races where people come out of the woodworks to run for the trophy,” Pollage said. “It has that prestige to it. If you’re a diehard local racer that don’t travel or go to the World Finals, you have that one shot a year of getting the trophy.”
Other major events include the Southern Big Buck Nationals, which Pollage co-promotes with Johnny Ezell, Funny Car Chaos and the King of Louisiana Car Show. Another huge event is coming in 2023 that should be announced soon.
With the warmer Louisiana winters, there is on-track action all 12 months. The track was even featured in the 2005 film “Dukes of Hazzard.” More important than being featured on the big screen, it’s the great hospitality the Lewis family has provided that keeps the racers coming back.
