Billy Warren Jr. finished third in the Motorcycle eliminations, one night after Jonah Allen beat Austin in the Race of Champions. Bo Grimes and Jordan Johnson also finished in the national top 10 in Mod (No Box) and Sportsman, respectively.
Those same racers led Music City to the team win at the IHRA Division 2 (Heat Wave) Summit Team Finals. Austin was the individual winner in the Motorcycle class over fellow Music City rider Brandon Frame. Johnson was the Division 2 Sportsman champion and David Pugh reached the final round in Top.
Shelby Thurman (Top), Brady Mase (Mod), Jordan Echols (Sportsman), Bailey Benda (Junior Dragster) and Warren all qualified for the IHRA Summit SuperSeries World Finals through the IHRA Sportsman Spectacular presented by Moser and FuelTech. Racers who qualified for the World Finals through the track’s IHRA Summit SuperSeries points were: Randy Rice (Top), Bo Grimes (Mod), Thomas Kleppin (Sportsman), Jonah Allen (Motorcycle) and Hope Capley (Junior Dragster).
The venue, which first opened as a quarter-mile track named Union Hill Drag Strip in 1958, has thrived under the leadership of Rick and Charlotte Gonzalez, who have owned the drag strip since 1989. They are constantly putting resources back in the facility to make it better for the racers. The versatile Nina Bishop works beside them in a variety of roles, including as track announcer.
Music City Raceway has concrete walls, newer aluminum bleachers, restrooms and over 350 paved parking spots. While nearby Nashville continues to rank as one of the fastest growing cities in the country, the drag strip offers a nice, rural setting on 135 acres.
In addition to the IHRA races which includes a Sportsman Spectacular on May 25, Music City hosts a number of other big events with great payouts.
