Indiana Tracks Upgrade Facilities Ahead of Big Racing Events

Saturday, 25 May 2024

MUNCIE, IN — International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) track owners and operators across the nation have worked hard through the offseason and early part of the 2024 season to provide the best facilities possible for their racers and other visitors.

Count a trio of Indiana drag strips — Muncie Dragway, Bunker Hill Dragstrip and US 41 Dragway — among those. While much of the motorsports world will be focused on the Hoosier State this weekend with the Indianapolis 500, these tracks have their own marquee events coming up.

Muncie Dragway is finishing up a huge project of repaving the race track. The added concrete earlier this week as they’ve embarked on a long list of improvements. This historic track was once operated by former IHRA President Ted Jones.

Current operators Scott and Dawn Daniels were visited by current IHRA President Mel Roth earlier this week. There are multiple big events coming up at Muncie the next month, including the Moser Engineering Big Bucks Shootout and IHRA Ironman Classic.

Roth also visited Bunker Hill Dragstrip, which is scheduled to host the Throwback Showdown featuring the Indiana Outlaws Gassers this Saturday. Gates open at 9 a.m. and a swap meet starts then. Racing begins at 10:15 a.m.

Bunker Hill concession

Indiana’s first dragway built in 1956 will host the IHRA Sportsman Spectacular presented by Moser on July 6. One of the big offseason projects by owners Terry and Cori McMillen is the concession building they’ve been updating all spring, adding memorabilia to make it a cool place to hang out.

US41 Dragstrip continues to set a high standard, recently working with Mass Traction to make the track as flat, nice and smooth as possible. General manager Dominic Blasco got the capital improvements approved to mill the entire quarter-mile. Mass explained there was adjustments that had to be made with the track now having one of the best surfaces in the entire country.

“They tried putting rubber on it, but the grind marks were too aggressive,” said Brandon Mass, owner of Mass Traction. “They called me for an emergency grind. We left Alabama and drove 1,000 miles overnight. They ran a bracket race until 7 o’clock Saturday night, and then we worked around the clock to do a 150-foot scrape, grind and rebuild. We removed all the match lines the milling machine left, cleaned the surface and reapplied a brand layer of rubber and track lube. We were finished by Monday at noon.”

They also re-did the waterboxes at Morocco, Indiana track, with over 220 feet overall. US41 is hosting the All Gas, No Brakes Car Show and Grudge Race this weekend. The track will also host the IHRA Division 5 (Thunder) Summit Team Finals for a second straight year Sept. 19-21.

We encourage all the racers in the area to come visit these fine facilities and appreciate the work they’ve put in. Make sure you’re part of the action of the IHRA Summit SuperSeries, the most prestigious national championship in all of bracket racing.
