Three races, 20 different winners during busy Maryland Pro-Am weekend

Sunday, 14 July 2013

One of the most anticipated stops on the entire Summit Pro-Am Tour, Maryland International Raceway hosted a Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour presented by AMSOIL doubleheader over the weekend plus the conclusion of the Richmond Pro-Am from April making for a busy weekend with plenty of winners.

And of the 21 Ironman trophies handed out over the weekend, only one driver managed to double-up.

Winners from the regularly scheduled Division 1 doubleheader at MIR were Scott Wasko and Vonnie Mills (Top Sportsman), Cody Bayus and Larry Cox Jr. (Top Dragster), Norman Hall and Nick Chiles (Super Stock), Stephen McGrath and Sterling Simmons Jr. (Stock), Vince Gregoire and Mike Harbaugh (Quick Rod), Gerald Pierce and Vince Gregoire (Super Rod) and Michael Schiberl and Dale Koncen (Hot Rod).

From the rain-delayed Richmond Pro-Am that began and April and finished nearly three months later, those winners were Mike Koontz (Top Sportsman), Chad Traylor (Top Dragster), Pete D’Agnolo (Super Stock), Chris Bowman (Stock), Tommy Cable (Quick Rod), Kevin O’Brien (Super Rod) and Jake Milstead (Hot Rod).

Vince Gregoire

The only driver to earn a double during the busy weekend in Maryland was Lake View, New York native Vince Gregoire. Gregoire won Quick Rod on Day 1 and Super Rod on Day 2 in his first finals of the year. Ironically Gregoire offset his two wins with two first round exits in the other two races.

Gregoire’s two wins included a very narrow win over two-time weekend finalist Tommy Cable as the two drivers put together tremendous packages with Gregoire winning by eight thousandths of a second at the stripe. Gregoire had a .003 light and ran an 8.911, 162.51 in the 8.90 index class while Cable produced a .008 light and ran an 8.914, 174.62. Gregoire’s Day 2 Super Rod win was just as close, with the New Yorker driving his ’55 Bel Air to a .035 margin of victory over Brian Baker.

Bobby Spence produced two final round appearances over the weekend in IHRA’s premier sportsman class as the Woodbine, Maryland native drove his ’09 Racetech dragster to runner-up finishes to Cody Bayus and Larry Cox Jr. Bayus won in a double-fault as Bayus was four thousandths to the good and Cox won by a tiny .002 margin of victory on Day 2.

Stephen McGrath

Stephen McGrath (Rochester, N.Y.) made up plenty of ground over the weekend in the Division 1 race in Stock by taking the win on Saturday. Driving his H/SA ’73 Dart, McGrath went five rounds ending with a narrow win over Jeff Gardiner, giving him a significant push in the standings and into contention for a top three position. McGrath got the jump off the line by two thousandths of a second and ran an 11.523, 110.82 on a 11.51 dial to Gardiner’s 10.797, 121.20 on a 10.77.

Mark Payne’s run of three consecutive Division 1 Top Sportsman wins came to an end of the weekend as Payne fell in the third round both days to race winner and runner-up Vonnie Mills and Ronnie Proctor. Mills drove his ’06 Cobalt to a Day 1 win over David Cox, while Scott Wasko took Day 2 in his ’94 Chevy Lumina over Proctor.

The Maryland Pro-Am officially wrapped the in-division season for Patriots racers.
