Brinkley collects three Ironmen, Marr two at Division 4 Summit Pro-Am Tour opener at State Capitol Raceway

Monday, 14 April 2014

Veteran racers Shannon Brinkley and Russell Marr proved the class of the field over the weekend at the IHRA Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour presented by AMSOIL Division 4 season opener at State Capitol Raceway as the pair of Texas natives took multiple wins in Louisiana.

Highlands, Texas native Brinkley collected three Ironmen over the two-day weekend, sweeping Super Rod and adding another win in Quick Rod to give him a trio of IHRA trophies to take home, while Forney, Texas’ Marr added a pair of victories in sweeping Top Sportsman to wrap up an exciting weekend at the Baton Rouge facility.

Other winners during the Division 4 opener were Eli McGee and Nick Brener (Top Dragster), Larry Stewart and John Clegg (Super Stock), Jay Robinson and Jimmy Hidalgo Jr. (Stock), Christopher Dodd (Quick Rod), Reggie Baudoin and Mike Frederick (Hot Rod), Shallon Broussard and Jackson Core (Junior Masters), Jordan Broussard and Ty Casey (Junior Advanced) and Kacee Guedry (Junior Beginner).

Brinkley went four rounds in Super Rod both days and five rounds in Quick Rod, ending the weekend with a 14-1 round record in the pair of classes. He bested Marcus Skipper on the opening day of the divisional doubleheader in a double-breakout (9892 to 9.880) and followed that up with a double red-light win over Randy Phillips, with Brinkley closest to the green with a -.002 foul. His third victory of the weekend came on day two in Quick Rod when he bested Vance Lakey who lit the red bulb.

Marr had two wins in his 468 Chevy-powered 2003 Cavalier, besting series veterans Ricky Vedros and Kamron Wright on his way to the double-Ironman weekend. Wright went red in one of Marr’s victories, while Vedros gave the Texas native all he could handle. Vedros had the jump at the line – .005 to .032 – but Marr battled back on the top end with a 7.052, 199.29 on a 7.06 dial to Vedros’ 7.437, 185.37 on a 7.47 in a double-breakout win.

While not taking a win, Louisiana natives David Latino, Slate Cummings and Brad Core all made double finals in Super Stock, Stock, Hot Rod and Top Dragster, but the trio lost all six finals.
