Weekend Wrap-up: IHRA Summit Pro-Am Tour returns to Cordova Dragway Park

Tuesday, 22 July 2014

After more than a decade away, the IHRA’s Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour presented by AMSOIL returned to Cordova Dragway Park over the weekend for a special Wild Card event.

With points on the line for racers in all divisions, the Summit Pro-Am Tour event at Cordova Dragway Park brought out a number of drivers from across the Midwest and beyond, including a number of new faces. The winner’s circle was filled with drivers new to the IHRA, plus a few regular stepping it up on the big stage.

Cordova’s biggest winners were Anthony Layne, Aaron Allison and Michael Freischel who made deep runs both days. Other winners from the event at Cordova Dragway were Curt Fredrich and Jeff Southerland (Top Sportsman), Layne and Brian Folk (Top Dragster), Dean Mesenbring and Marion Stephenson (Super Stock), Aaron Allison and Rob Turkal (Stock), Mike Eggleston and Jerry Hoss (Quick Rod), Brian Folk and Michael Freischel (Super Rod) and Marc Erickson and Josh Kanselaar (Hot Rod).

Layne survived the largest class on the property to the tune of a 7-1 round record in Top Dragster, collecting a win on Saturday in front of the large crowds gathered for the Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series, while also making a run to the semis on Sunday. Layne, of Coal Valley, Illinois, defeated Charlie Hamma in Saturday’s Top Dragster final, besting him on the tree with a .008 light while running a 7.580 on a 7.556 dial at over 170 mph. Hamma had a 7.458 on a 7.48 in the runner-up effort. On Sunday, Brad Baker eliminated Layne in the semis in a very close race.

Michael Freischel, from St. Paul, Minnesota, raced to a win in Super Rod on Sunday and a semifinal appearance on Saturday. After falling to Dave Johnson on Day 1, Freischel stormed back on the second day in his ’27 Ford to get his revenge on Johnson in the finals. Johnson bested Freischel on the tree with a .008 to a .014, but Johnson ran a bit under the 9.90 index with a 9.884, while Freischel put down a cool 9.965 at 149.60 mph. Johnson finished runner-up in Super Rod both days.

Aaron Allison rounded out the trio of big winners from Cordova, recording a win in Stock on Saturday and a runner-up finish in Super Stock on Sunday. Allison, an IHRA regular from East Palestine, Ohio, bested Jim Petersen on Saturday in a double-breakout with a 10.489 on a 10.49 to Petersen’s 13.156 on a 13.21. He followed that up with a loss to Marion Stephenson on Day 2 as Stephenson drove his ’90 Sunbird to a 9.996 on a 9.98 dial to take the win.
