Final-Round Recap, IHRA Summit Sportsman National Championship at Darlington Dragway

DARLINGTON, S.C. — The International Hot Rod Association moved to historic Darlington Dragway for the fifth of 15 race weekends that comprise the Summit Sportsman National Championship.

It was the largest field of cars to date for a three-day event, which included the conclusion of the February weekend from Palm Beach International Raceway. The two official Darlington races began on Saturday and went through Sunday.


Competitors entered events in the following classes: Top Sportsman, Top Dragster, Super Stock, Stock, Quick Rod, Super Rod, Hot Rod and Junior Dragster.  Full results are available here: http://dragstory.com/forum/index.php?board=292.0; a recap is below:

CAC 8872

Top Dragster: Joe Gary from Greenwood, S.C., won when John Tolisano from Jupiter, Fla., red-lighted in the Top Dragster final. With no pressure, Gary ran a 5.324 elapsed time at 92.40 mph on a 4.48 dial-in with a .007 reaction time. Tolisano had a -.007 light and then had a 7.335 run at 55.82 mph on a 4.47 dial-in.

Top Sportsman: Clayton Roberts from Willow Springs, N.C., used a .003 reaction time to pull off the close win over Joseph Bagwell from Hendersonville, S.C., in the Top Sportsman final. Roberts had a 4.623-second run at 147.01 mph on a 4.61 dial-in. Bagwell matched his dial-in with a 4.859 elapsed time at 144.28 mph with a .014 reaction time.

Quick Rod: Ashley McDaniel from Forest City, N.C., worked her way through Quick Rod eliminations and won at the starting line in the final against Randal Langley from Naples, Fla. McDaniel paired a 5.752 elapsed time at 125.49 mph with a .010 reaction time. Langley was slower at the start with a .082 reaction time and ran a 5.667 elapsed time at 140.76 mph.

Super Rod: Todd Comer from New London, N.C., roared down the track on a 6.406-second run at 122.48 mph and .007 reaction time to take the Super Rod title. Mike Ruff from Orlando, Fla., had a 6.41-second run at 120.29 mph and a .023 reaction time.

Hot Rod: It was another win for drivers from the Tar Heel State in Hot Rod as Brian Crumpler from Elm City, N.C., posted a 6.986-second pass at 102.20 mph with a .018 reaction time. Casey Sims from Honea Path, S.C., had a slower reaction time at .053 to go with his run of 6.966 seconds and 104.94 mph.

Super Stock: Pete DAgnolo from Rochester, N.Y., improved one spot from the previous day to gain the Super Stock win over Corey Taylor from Lumberton, N.C.  DAgnolo had a 6.141 elapsed time at 106.94 mph with a .015 reaction time on a 6.12 dial-in. Taylor completed a 6.254-second run at 107.91 mph with a 6.24 dial-in and a .056 reaction time.

Stock: In a battle of North Carolina drivers, Terry Taylor from Lumberton scored the win over Chip Johnson from Fayetteville in the Stock final. Taylor was solid with a 6.189 elapsed time at 105.14 mph and a .035 reaction time on a 6.16 dial-in. Johnson posted a 8.179-second run at 79.37 mph against a 8.14 dial-in and coupled with a .052 reaction time.

Junior Dragster: Brittany Dial from Maxton, N.C., was truly dialed-in with a 7.905-second pass against a 7.90 dial-in. She ran 82.93 mph after her .065 reaction time.  Runner-up Gage Burch from Palmetto, Fla., red-lighted with a .018 reaction time and finished with a 8.004-second run at 80.62 mph against a 7.90 dial-in.

Top Dragster: Matthew McDaniel from Forest City, N.C., won on a holeshot to take the Top Dragster victory against John Labbouse from White House, Tenn.  McDaniel had a .004 reaction time and ran a 4.603 elapsed time at 150.05 mph against a 4.59 dial-in. Labbouse matched his dial-in with a 4.567-second run at 150.20 mph, and matched it with a .017 reaction time.

Top Sportsman: For the second time in three days, Doug Gbur from Greer, S.C., was the Top Sportsman winner. Gbur had a 4.735-second run at 147.60 and a .009 reaction time against a 4.74 dial-in. Runner-up Mike Snow from Cowpens, S.C., finished in 4.893 seconds and 141.38 mph with a .012 reaction time against a 4.91 dial-in.

Quick Rod: Danny Waters Jr. from LaGrange, N.C., also won for the second time in three days in Quick Rod. He rolled down the track in 5.745 seconds at 144.69 mph with a .010 reaction time. Runner-up Tony Helms from Ringgold, Ga., finished in 5.720 seconds at 140.45 mph with a .041 reaction time.

Super Rod: Lee Ashe from Jonesville, S.C. ran unopposed in the Super Rod final. With no final-round opponent, he eased down the track in 13.311 seconds at 65.60 mph with a 1.562 reaction time.

Hot Rod: Chris Webb from Four Oaks, N.C., followed up a runner-up performance in Friday’s Palm Beach make-up race with a Hot Rod victory on Sunday. Webb finished with a 6.999 reaction time at 99.69 mph and had a .070 reaction time. David Owen from Callahan, Fla., was the runner-up after going 6.990 at 94.42 with a .007 reaction time.

Super Stock: Pete DAngolo from Rochester, N.Y., reached the final round for the third straight day and completed the Saturday-Sunday sweep in Super Stock. DAgnolo ran a 6.20 elapsed time at 104.80 mph with a .021 reaction time on a 6.14 dial-in. Runner-up Tim Sloan from Sanford, N.C., wasn’t as quick at the tree with a .106 reaction time. He had a 6.005 second-run at 113.49 mph on a 5.98 dial-in.

Stock: Merrill Schrimscher from Lake Mary, Fla., had a perfect light .000 and a near perfect run in the Stock final. He finished with a 6.993 elapsed time at 90.20 mph on a 6.98 dial-in. Al Brister of Beaufort, N.C., was runner-up for the second time in three days. He finished with a 6.825-second pass at 87.28 and a .069 reaction time on a 6.98 dial-in.

Junior Dragster: The long trip from Martin, Mich., was worth it for Samuel Peterson in the Junior Dragster final. He got the win light with an 8.127-second pass at 80.46 mph and a .030 reaction time on an 8.17 dial-in. Runner-up Jordan Baker of nearby Sumter, S.C., nearly matched a 7.98 dial-in with a 7.973-second pass at 82.90 mph. But, Baker was too quick at the tree and red-lighted with a -.335 reaction time.
