Weekend Recap, IHRA Summit Sportsman National Championship at Dragway 42

WEST SALEM, Ohio —The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Summit Sportsman National Championship made the final stop in the 14-stop racing series on Sept. 23-24 at Dragway 42.

Jake Foster swept Junior Dragster races and Jimmy Hidalgo Jr. made the final round both days in Stock competition. Vernon Rowland was a finalist in both Quick Rod and Super Rod on Saturday. It was a family affair in Quick Rod on Sunday with Kristopher Fields and Steve Fields meeting in the final.

Competitors entered the weekend events in the following classes: Top Dragster, Top Sportsman, Quick Rod, Super Rod, Hot Rod, Super Stock, Stock and Junior Dragster. Full results are available here:http://dragstory.com/forum/index.php?board=324.0; a weekend recap of Dragway 42 action is below.

Winner Circle Images HERE

Top Dragster:Will Crawford from Westland, Mich., won the Top Dragster final on a holeshot over Marco Abruzzi of Warren, Ohio as both drivers matched their 4.69 dial-in times. Crawford had a .004 reaction time to go along with his 145.21 mph pass. Abruzzi had a .019 start and sped down the track at 147.35 mph.

Top Sportsman:Marlon Goates from Troy, Texas matched his 4.68 dial-in going 150.55 mph to top the Top Sportsman field. Goates had a slightly quicker reaction time .009 to .011 over runner-up Nathan Vanbeek from Selma, N.C.  Vanbeek had a 4.91-second pass at 142.54 mph on a 4.90 dial-in.

 

Quick Rod:It was holeshot win for Vernon Rowland from Blanchard, Okla., in Quick Rod. He left the tree at .002 to .019 for runner-up Jason Hartig of Lancastle, Ohio. Rowland’s pass was 5.719 seconds and 130.47 mph to a 5.709 and 135.18 for Hartig.

Super Rod:Justin Phillips from Nove, Ohio kept Oklahoma driver Rowland from doubling up by taking the Super Rod victory. Phillips paired a 6.422-second pass at 110.27 mph with a .007 reaction time. Rowland sped down the track in 6.428 seconds and 123.42 mph with a .019 reaction time.

Hot Rod:Brittany Devore from Blanchard, Okla., captured the victory in Hot Rod when final round opponent Nick Karas of Northfield Center, Ohio red-lighted. Devore had a final-round effort of 7.008 seconds and 101.49 mph with a .155 reaction time.

Super Stock:Joe Buchanon from Fremont, Ohio matched his 6.43 dial-in at 104.65 mph to win the Stock final over Jimmy Hildago Jr., of Donaldsville, La.  Hildago had the quicker reaction time .048 to .054, but came up a little short with a 6.307-second pass at 106.31 mph against a 6.24 dial-in.

Stock:A couple of drivers from the Buckeye State faced off with Bryan Merkle from Johnstown, Ohio taking the Stock win over Rick Rondy of Galloway, Ohio. Merkle won on a holeshot with a .030 start to .204 for Rondy. Merkle went down the track in 6.843 seconds at 84.95 mph, while Rondy finished in 6.428 seconds at 104.94 mph.

Junior Dragster:Jake Foster defeated Alex Kish in a battle of Michigan racers in the Junior Dragster final. Foster from White Cloud had a .022 reaction time and then coasted down the track in 11.295 seconds at 34.67 mph, after Kish red-lighted. Kish went ahead and made an 8.037-second pass at 81.26 mph against an 8.06 dial-in.

Top Dragster: Jacob Elrod from Harrod, Ohio had a perfect light to beat Jimbob Davies of Warren, Ohio in the Top Dragster final. Elrod had a 4.681-second pass at 144.83 mph on a 4.64 dial-in to go along with the start. Davies, who left with a .022 reaction time finished with a 4.725-second run at 146.91 mph against a 4.70 dial-in. 

Top Sportsman: Rob Harvischak, also from Warren, Ohio, won on a holeshot in Top Sportsman. He had a .015 reaction time to .093 for runner-up John Hoschstedler of Niles, Mich. Harvischak went down the track in 4.899 seconds at 135.09 mph against a 4.88 dial-in. Hoschstedler posted a 4.804 at 142.36 against a 4.80 dial-in.

Quick Rod: It was a day of celebration for the Fields of Carleton, Michigan. Kristopher Fields had a .194 reaction time and went 5.70 seconds at 128.83 mph. His father, Steve Fields, had a .190 reaction time and streamed down the track in 5.685 seconds at 135.46 mph.

Super Rod: Steve Thedor from Columbus, Ohio captured the Super Rod win when his final-round opponent red-lighted. Thedor was quick at the tree with a .006 reaction time and a pass at 6.424 seconds at 126.19 mph. Paul Foiler from Willard, Ohio ran 7.269 seconds at 84.49 after fouling out.

Hot Rod: Another .006 reaction time was posted by Hot Rod winner Dale Kindl from Independence, Ohio. He then made a 7.076-second run at 97.61 mph. Runner-up Rod Ferris from Dover, Ohio had a .009 reaction time and then went 6.995 seconds at 101.51 mph.

Super Stock: The tree was a determining factor also in Super Stock with Andy Kroenbitter from Millersport, Ohio winning the reaction time battle .025 to .078 over runner-up Jeff Niceswanger from Zanesville, Ohio. Kronenbitter then ran 5.793 seconds at 110.11 mph against a 5.95 dial-in. Niceswanger finished 6.342 seconds and 106.21 against a 6.33 dial-in.

Stock: For the second straight day, Jimmy Hidalgo Jr. from Donaldsville, La., made the Stock final. This time, he posted a winning effort of a 6.638-second pass at 99.16 mph against a 6.65 dial-in, combined with a .048 reaction time. Runner-up Anthony Platania of Rochester, N.Y., ran 6.616 seconds at 100.54 mph against a 6.65 dial-in, paired with a .078 reaction time.

Junior Dragster: Jake Foster from White Cloud, Mich., scored the weekend sweep in Junior Dragster with 8.009 second-run at 79.48 against a 7.96 dial-in. Zachary Vitez from Elma, N.Y., posted a 7.992 and 81.12 mph against a 7.95 dial-in. Foster was quicker at the start with a .023 reaction time to .070 for Vitez.
