Smiley, an Emerson Iowa racer, was all smiles after his 5.552-second run at 121.36 mph against a 5.55 dial-in. Fellow Hawkeye State racer Kyle Kunze had a little better start in the Top (Box) final with a .022 to .036, but was a little short with a 5.609 at 120.61 mph against a 5.59 dial-in.
Saturday’s winners came from four different states.
Kansas racer Brady Stallbaumer emerged with the Mod (No Box) win when his final-round opponent Tyler Heitman fouled at the start. Stallbaumer’s winning package was a 6.896 elapsed time at 98.49 mph along with a .024 reaction time. It was a disappointment for Nebraska racer Heitman, who was spot on with a 5.461 run against a 5.46 dial-in.
Terry Vanderzanden, a Plattsmouth, Nebraska driver, won on a holeshot with his .019 reaction time. His run at 7.712 seconds and 91.06 mph against a 7.69 dial-in held up. Iowa racer Rick Pitzer was runner-up with a 7.600 elapsed time at 92.50 mph against a 7.59 dial-in, coupled with a .031 reaction time.
The Junior Dragster final featured a pair of South Dakota racers. Jack Beutler from Watertown took the win with a 7.960-second pass at 80.80 mph against a 7.95 dial-in. Tyler Honomichi from Sioux Falls had a little better reaction time at .043 to .047, but wasn’t quite as close with an 8.107 elapsed time at 80.37 mph against an 8.07 dial-in.
Collins Motorsports presented special bonuses of $700 (Top), $500 (Mod), $200 (Sportsman) and $100 (Junior) to the race winners.
Jerry McGraw, another Plattsmouth driver, captured Sunday’s Top (Box) victory. He posted a 4.482 elapsed time at 150.30 mph against a 4.48 dial-in. Minnesota racer Jason Charlton was runner-up with a 6.645-second run at 103.88 mph and a 6.63 dial-in. Charlton had a little better start with a .035 to .038 reaction time.
Clark Doukas from Omaha was the Mod (No Box) winner after final-round opponent Matt Butler fouled at the start. Doukas cruised down the drag strip in 7.627 seconds at 58.18 mph. Butler posted a 7.203-second pass at 93.57 mph.
Joe McCarty was the best in the Sportsman class. The Rock Rapids, Iowa driver ran closer to 7.62 dial-in with a 7.612 elapsed time at 89.06 mph. Runner-up Kirk Brier from Bellevue, Nebraska was quicker at the start by .016 seconds, but came up a little slower on his run at 7.594 seconds and 89.59 mph also against a 7.59 dial-in.
There were two Junior Dragster races with Nolan Kunze from Persia, Iowa winning the Pro race on a holeshot. He left the line in .048 to .086 over runner-up Taylor Hansen from Anthon, Iowa. His package included an 8.049-second pass at 79.80 mph. Hansen was a little faster down the track in 7.929 seconds at 81.46 mph. Reece Kalasky from Council Bluffs, Iowa had a single run in the final round to win in Junior Trophy.
