Janousek trigged the red light at the start which gave Leung an opportunity to go down the track in 7.723 seconds at 83.66 mph, knowing he was the World Champion. Leung was grateful in the moments afterwards.
“It means everything to win this. I wasn’t alone as all my family and friends were here to support me,” he said. “I had to pinch myself a few times, felt like I was dreaming. It capped off a great season and I’m looking forward to one last season (in Juniors).”
Like anything in life worth having, the win was something that Leung had to work for. He and others missed a Thursday test-and-tune due to rain and he had a little difficulty at first getting used to the lights at Holly Springs Motorsports Park.
However, he found his footing and beat Caden Keyes, another Texas champion from Penwell Knights Raceway, once it got down to five drivers. With the best winning package which included a .027 reaction time along with a 7.746-second pass at 82.95 mph against a 7.73 dial-in, Leung earned a bye in the semifinals to reach the final round.
“It started out where I was trying to find myself on the tree,” he said. “By the time we hit qualifying, I found myself, worked my way through and got to the final. I just had to do what I did every round.”
What he did was earn a terrific prize package that included a $10,000 big check from Summit Racing Equipment, an IHRA Gold Card, a World Champion Diamond Ring and a prestigious IHRA World Champion Ironman Trophy. Dart’s Carts provided a Club Car 48V golf cart as the Junior Dragster grand prize about which Leung said, “That’s amazing. I can’t wait to cruise around on it.”
While the grand prize is something he can enjoy at home, it’s really something he looks forward to driving at his home track. It’s hard for him to even express how much Wisconsin International Raceway means to him.
“There’s always good competition and the community there is always great,” he said. “Everyone there is always so nice. Words can’t describe how much I love that place.”
Outside of racing, Leung focuses on his studies. He looks to attend college with a goal of obtaining a career in data analytics, specifically within the sports industry. He certainly was acquire the right information to get the job done at Holly Springs, now representing the sport as IHRA Summit SuperSeries Junior Dragster World Champion.
