THE SPORTSMAN CORNER 16 WEST SALEM, Ohio — Despite numerous attempts to race, persistent rain caused the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Summit Sportsman Spectacular event at Dragway 42 to be ended after just a few rounds of racing. Cars were only able to get on the track for a few hours Saturday, June 9 between storms. The cars completed just two rounds of No Box competition, and only one round for Box cars and Juniors. After massive track cleaning efforts continued that Sunday, track time was limited before another storm hit. Even with the rainout, several racers came away as winners. Twenty-seven racers split the purse in the Moser Engineering $10,000 race, and all those who paid entry fees for the cancelled $5,000-to- win race were refunded. Prizes were awarded for the best losing packages in the completed RACERS COME AWAY WINNERS DESPITE DRAGWAY 42 WASH OUT first two rounds. With the IHRA Summit Sportsman Spectacular designed to be a fun-filled weekend, Donny Hagar was the Scrubblade golf cart race winner. Former IHRA Quick Rod and Top Dragster world champion Travis Colangelo received a Summit Racing Equipment 10 x 20 tent as the first- round prize for the Box racers. Kevin Melhorn (No Box) earned a $100 Sunoco Race Fuels Certificate and Jesse Mitschke (Junior) was awarded a Summit 10 x 10 tent.
