One of the worst natural disasters in American history couldn’t keep James McPherson Jr. from the race track.

The longtime resident of New Orleans was one of the victims when the Category 5 Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. The storm surge caused multiple failures of the levees holding back Lake Pontchartrain, and left a huge portion of the city underwater. McPherson’s house was among the areas flooded, and he remembers Katrina as leaving behind 13 feet of water and a desolate area in its aftermath.

A customer comes into the shop and asks, “How much?” Mike replies, “I don’t know; I guess $500 will do.” Silence as the customer digests what he’s heard. “I got all the nuts and acorns out of it – left one in there so you’d know it was there,” Mike Boyles, 71, said to the customer that brought his vehicle into Boyles Automotive in King, N.C. just north of Winston-Salem.

Due to inclement weather, the International Hot Rod Association and Maryland International Raceway have postponed the May 5-7 IHRA Summit Sportsman National Championship event until the weekend of July 14-16 due to a washout predicted for Friday and unstable weather projections through the rest of the weekend.

This weekend the IHRA Summit Sportsman National Championship series will feature two double race weekends as the 15-stop series comes to US 131 Motorsports Park and Farmington Dragway this weekend.  This is one of just two weekends this season that the Summit Sportsman National Championship will feature doube-double race weekends.
