Racers at the Orangeburg, S.C., facility will still have the chance to participate in the IHRA Summit SuperSeries, the largest and most prestigious bracket racing program in drag racing. The $200,000 program is the World Championship for over 8,000 Sportsman racers at nearly 100 IHRA-sanctioned tracks each season.
New owner Jeff Biegun purchased the track last November and immediately announced plans for a series of upgrades. There is a new tower in place and plenty of work has been done to the track surface. Other upgrades either finished or in the works include a new timing system and scoreboards, 2,000 feet of concrete walls and several new coats of paint.
The staff is also working on a number of other spectator amenities including ticket windows, and concessions. In addition, they are clearing off more of the 314-acre property for other racing venues and to create more room for special events like swap meets, concerts and flea markets.
“They’ve put a lot of heart and soul into it, and have done wonders with the property,” IHRA Division Director Josh Peake said about the track’s improvements. “From a drag racing standpoint, they’ve made it into one of the top 1/8-mile facilities in the entire region.”
