Built on top of a former coal mine on top of a mountain in southern West Virginia, it features an 1/8-mile drag strip with a full 660 feet of concrete, 1,390 feet of shutdown area and another 200 feet of sand trap. Beyond the drag strip, there is a course for ATV riders. It’s also the newest member of the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) family.
Wilson has worked with business partner Pete Scalzo for 12 years. They currently operate a drag racing track in Long Island, New York. They also partnered with the former Green Cove Dragway, a Florida track which was IHRA sanctioned. They had previously operated Cherokee Race Park in East Tennessee.
He’s well familiar with the IHRA Summit SuperSeries program and can’t wait until racers from his track can participate in the largest and most prestigious grassroots, Sportsman national championship program in bracket racing.
“I love the (IHRA Summit) Team Finals,” he said. “We love bracket racing. With the Sportsman class, it’s always a great way to introduce people to drag racing at a low cost.”
Wilson’s own background includes first as a spectator at Jax Raceway in Jacksonville. Over the years, he has been a car builder, driver and promoter. He still owns a Top Sportsman Camaro, but has found his greatest passion is track operator.
It's an exciting time with opening day scheduled for October 22 and future plans for a diversified schedule. It’s one reason that Wilson has placed an emphasis on the ATVs being such a part of the program.
“I figured that’s something we can do rain or shine,” he said. “Even if we get the rain, we can play in the dirt. We also look to have some dirt drags and events like that.”
