Since 2018, the track has been owned by Larry Thompson, a legendary grudge racing promoter. Thompson started in the sport selling t-shirts, building a successful business. He later branched out to promoting events, becoming one of the leading promoters on the East Coast. He was the first African-American to promote major events at different tracks in the Mid-Atlantic area.
Custom T’s is a corporation witha 501c3 tax deductible foundation. Always innovative, Custom T's Motorsports Park has teamed with IHRA to form a strong bracket racing program. It will be tied into the IHRA Summit SuperSeries, the most prestigious national championship in bracket racing, but will also have Custom T’s unique flavor. It promises to appeal to a younger crowd who attend the street car and import-car events at the track.
“We don’t want to change drag racing, but we believe it’s time for an evolution in drag racing,” track general manager Viktor Rasiia said. “We’re going to create the ‘Beach Battle Racing Series,’ which will be a IHRA-sanctioned bracket series from April to September ending at our ‘King of the Beach’ event which is our biggest bracket race of the year, bringing out thousands of people over a four-day period.”
The “King of the Beach” is much more than a race. It’s an event where over 300 bicycles are given away to kids in the local area. Being a great community partner, it’s one of three huge events the track hosts along with “Grudge Racing 4 the Cure” which raises thousands of dollars to fight breast cancer and “Sunday 4 Service” to help first responders. Through the “Sunday 4 Service,” the track donated $1,200 to the Colonial Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad in 2022.
Located on 50 acres and only 3 1/2 miles from the second-largest beachfront in the state of Virginia, it’s highlighted by the 1/8-mile drag strip. There are plenty of events already on the track’s schedule including car shows and events geared towards different car makes. Still, the IHRA bracket racing fills an important piece of the 2023 puzzle.
“Bracket racing kept the track alive when it was going through its tough days,” Rasiia said. “The community of Colonial Beach are overwhelmingly bracket racers. There are some match racers, some Pro Mod guys, but the majority of the guys are bracket racers. We’re excited to make the announcement and we can’t wait to get started.”
