The historic drag strip’s features all kinds of racing and race cars. This season they hosted Funny Car, Rods, Altered and Jet Cars, along with street to strip action to get racing off the streets and on the track. It has been a strong season of IHRA Summit SuperSeries bracket racing and the track hosted an IHRA Ironman Classic in August.
Rick Marcy captured the Top (Box) win with a dead-on eight run paired with a .008 reaction time for the prestigious IHRA Ironman victory. Other winners of Ironman trophies included: Max Tafoya in Mod (Box), Juan Moreno Jr. in the Junior Dragsters and Mike Parish, who doubled up with wins in Sportsman and Motorcycle.
There are unique challenges with a mile-high elevation, and big fluctuations with the density altitude. There is also history of stars racing at the New Mexico track. While Albuquerque is famous as home of the Unser family, winners of nine Indianapolis 500 trophies, there’s also a rich history with drag racing.
John Paxton set the Hydrogen Peroxide Rocket record with a speed of 326.08 mph in 1973. That’s the speed where today’s Nitro-powered Top Fuel and Funny Cars are running 50 years later. Jet Dragsters, Nitro Dragsters and Funny Cars, Altereds and Pro Mods have all set speed records over the years. Shayne Larson hit 200 mph in a Top Alcohol Funny Car in the 1/8-mile this season.
