With the event tailored to Music City’s racing programs, Sutton won the $5,000 top prize for the Super Pro (Box) victory after a strong .008 reaction time. The Hendersonville, Tenn., driver went down the drag strip in 5.861 seconds at 110.24 mph on a 5.84 dial-in. Runner-up Kelby Walker posted a 6.080 second-run at 111.09 mph after a .014 reaction time.
Sutton doubled up at the suburban Nashville track in the Pro (No Box) class after final-round opponent Bryson Scruggs red-lighted. With the victory in hand, Sutton cruised down the track in 7.448 seconds at 64.36 mph. Scruggs, who was just .004 too quick at the tree, finished in 6.879 seconds at 81.08 mph.
Kenny Ray, a hometown racer from Goodlettsville, took the Ironman trophy for the Sportsman class. His Chevy S-10 pickup made a 7.919-second pass at 84.90 mph, paired with a .022 reaction time. Brandon Frame was the runner-up with a 9.328-second run at 66.46 mph and a .030 reaction time.
In the Street Legal Trophy class, Josh Bailey won on a holeshot in his 1986 Honda. Bailey posted a .038 reaction time to Fuqua with a .137 start. Bailey went down the track in 12.662 mph at 48.43 mph. Fuqua finished in 10.877 seconds at 65.40 mph.
The motorcycles were part of the action as well with Chase Morris winning the 4.60 Ultra Bike class. Morris zipped down the drag strip in 4.678 seconds at 132.45 with a .020 reaction time. Runner-up Chester Lee had a faster top speed at 133.97 mph, but a slower .040 reaction time results in a 4.724 elapsed time.
Piper Lynch took the Jr. Dragster title when final-round opponent Jacob Poss fouled out. Lynch had an 8.886-second run at 71.78 mph on an 8.81 dial-in. Poss finished in 13.264 seconds at 43.10 mph after being .005 too fast at the start.
The IHRA Sportsman Spectacular presented by Hagerty and Moser Engineering returns the weekend of July 31-August 2 with races at Beacon Dragway and Grand Bend Motorplex.
