Thanks to a program created by popular regional racer Kenny Ferguson, each year hundreds of bikes are given away to children in the area. With so many kids spending time indoors on phones, iPads and other devices, the bike giveaway encourages them to get outside, experience the outdoors and exercise.
Like the “King of the Beach,” a race which goes back decades, the bike giveaway has grown every year. Last year, 320 bikes were distributed at the event.
Ferguson and his family have donated many of the bikes, and they’ve also enlisted the help of plenty others who joined in the cause. It’s something both the Fergusons, Custom T’s track owner Larry Thompson and his staff is passionate about.
“Literally, kids are walking out of there with all kinds of bikes,” Custom T’s general manager Viktor Rasila said. “Some kids want the BMX bikes, some like other types, but there’s enough for all of them. Every year, it’s grown a little bigger so we’re excited.”
It adds to the excitement of the “King of the Beach,” which features races for the Big Tire, Homeboy Shootout and Top Sportsman classes, as well as bracket races for Top ET, Mod ET, Motorcycles and Junior Dragsters.
“This is our biggest bracket race, our biggest race overall,” Rasila said. “The track goes back in total operation 57 years and the King of the Beach goes all the way back to the 90s.”
