Legendary Photographer Richards Passes Away

Tuesday, 25 June 2024

The International Hot Rod Association passes on its thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of legendary drag racing photographer Roger Richards who died Tuesday morning.

Richards served as director of photography for Competition Plus for 25 years. He was one of the most respected people in the business and captured so many of the sport’s iconic moments. He was a staple at the IHRA national events back in the day, working alongside Bryan Epps.

“Back in the day, it was just the two of us doing all the IHRA coverage of the national events,” Epps recalled. “He was great doing all the behind the scenes, the human interest stories. So many people enjoyed the great work he did.”

Nicknamed “Geezer,” the veteran photographer's influence was felt by those throughout the industry. Richards stayed active until the end, fighting the heat to shoot the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway earlier this month.
