Warren Johnson, aka “the Professor” is, for many doorslammer fans, the John Force of Pro Stock racing. He is known for speaking his mind often without a filter. He will have an opinion on about any subject in drag racing from the management to track prep to even the track food, and there is never a doubt on where Warren Johnson stands on any subject.
Variety ruled the weekend as the drivers from Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina tested the strip at Orlando Speed World April 23 and 24. 19 different drivers won Ironmen, with the only double going to Junior Beginner driver Logan Westmoreland. David O’Bryon and Matthew Buck took home Top Sportsman honors, while Mark Smullen and Paul Rebis were the weekend’s Top Dragster Ironmen winners.
As a reminder to all Summit SuperSeries competitors, the 2016 program offers two ways to qualify for the Summit SuperSeries World Finals. You can be a Summit SuperSeries track champion or you can qualify by winning the main event of your regional Summit Team Finals.
In an effort to grow the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) sportsman programs and provide an abundance of options for competitors, the IHRA is pleased to continue the entry-level sportsman index class that will run at select events in 2016.
Junior Beginner ace Logan Westmoreland from Greenwood, South Carolina laid claim to double wins at the Orlando Summit Pro-Am Tour. Westmoreland came into the event with a 46 point lead in the Division 2 Heat Wave standings by putting up wins in Bradenton and another double win weekend at the South Georgia Summit Pro-Am event earlier in the season.
It was an excellent weekend of racing April 15 and 16, as the IHRA Summit Pro-Am Tour rolled into State Capitol Raceway in Port Allen, Louisiana. The doubleheader weekend produced winners in eight sportsman classes on Saturday and Sunday. Kevin Wilson and Vernon Rowland had an especially great weekend, as Wilson swept the Top Dragster competition and Rowland won twice in Quick Rod. 16 other drivers took home Ironmen as well.
The 1/8-mile facility in Crossville, Tennessee, formerly known as I-40 Dragway, was recently purchased by Nick Bresaw and Tommy Fitzgerald Jr. and has joined the IHRA family of member tracks. Bresaw and Fitzgerald Jr. are currently in the process of providing the facility with a multi-million dollar renovation and plan to reopen the rejuvenated Crossville Dragway mid-2016.
Vernon Rowland (Quick Rod) and Kevin Wilson (Top Dragster) pulled off the elusive double, winning both days of the State Capitol Division 4 Summit Pro-Am Tour event.
KINGS MTN. N.C. (April 13, 2015): The recent tragedy which took the life of multi-time Top Sportsman World Champion, Ronnie Davis, and critically injured longtime drag racing journalist, Ian Tocher, has rocked the heart of the drag racing community. Davis succumbed to injuries on Sunday, April 10, after a violent top end crash during the last qualifying session at the PDRA Spring Nationals on Saturday, April 9. The car made contact with Tocher during the crash, as he was photographing the event. Tocher is being treated for injuries at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill.
